We got to spend our day with CSUSM at Del Lago Academy and it was very exciting because I was in the middle of interviewing with Del Lago for a math position. I had read all through their website and school information and fallen in love with the school's philosophy of teaching and while we were there for a class visit, we got to take a tour with Principal Keith Nuthall and I fell in love with the school even more. The campus itself is beautiful and up on a hill with great views. But the culture of the school and what it is about is what I love so much. They have a wall in the school that he took us to that explains the mission, core beliefs and how they put instruction and structures together to make a school that will help build scholars, innovators and world citizens (their mission). They are committed to their 5 pillars of Welcome, Choice words, do no harm, never to late to learn, and be the best. Those are pretty good pillars for a school to stand upon. He talked about the restorative practices they use in the school to develop relationships and use those relationships to talk about issues and restore them.
They keep the learning process social, concentrate on the what, why and how and release responsibility of learning to their students. This is everything that I have wanted to do in teaching and partly what I believe the common core is working to implement everywhere, but without a school fully behind it, it will be more difficult to implement.
I was very impressed with Keith Nuthall's knowledge of education and all of the research that is out there. He talked about the Gates Foundation and Carnegie Foundation and what they did right and what they still struggled with. He talked about a lot of research that had been done in education and what the research shows and how this school was built on results that had been shown to be the most effective with students.
I had more rounds of interviews after this school visit and then found out that they wanted me to be a part of their team. I am more excited than I can even express. I feel like I will learn so much from the great teachers and principal and hopefully will be able to give back my passion for teaching to them.
