This week we had Diana Sanchez from Cal State San Marcos’ career center come to speak with us about finding jobs. She answered questions about resumes, letters of introduction, references and interviewing. Although I have had a lot of experience with all of these things already haven worked in multiple jobs in biotech, it was nice to hear the processes for education. Diana was very helpful and I am impressed with the resources that the CSUSM career center has to offer. They will do resume review for us and even do mock interviews with us. They also have an online program that will ask us interview questions and record our answers so that we can watch ourselves and learn how to improve. These tools are extremely useful. Diana gave each of us a magazine providing a lot of specific information on all of these subjects as well and she is a co-author of it.
I was feeling pretty anxious after this meeting, even though it was very helpful. However, I had already submitted a resume, letter of introduction and letters of references last week. I was excited that I received a call this week about coming in for an interview! So I guess my resume and letters are at least somewhat decent as they are. I’m excited for the chance to interview and am extremely excited about the school itself. I will continue to look for jobs, look at possible interview questions and prepare answers based on my educational philosophy. I also plan to try the mock interview program online and even take the career center up on their offer to do a mock interview in person.
After Diana provided so much help, we were able to hear another speaker by the name of Trent Suzuki. He was a graduate of CSUSM’s single subject credential program 3 years ago and is now working in the San Dieguito district at a middle school. He loves his job and also gave us advice about networking and making the schools see how passionate we are about our work and how much we want to help the schools.
I’m impressed with the speakers that the school is bringing in to make us think outside the box and also to prepare us to both find and get a job and then to succeed once we are in those jobs. Thank you, CSUSM!
