We had a principal's panel come to CSUSM to talk to us about interviewing and getting jobs as teachers from a principal's viewpoint. We had a great group of 3 principal's and they gave great advice and were extremely friendly. Dr. Jose Manual Villareal is now the principal at the Jouvenile Courts Correctional Schools. He moved here to find the most challenging environment he could find. He said that he encourages everyone in education to stay uncomfortable. Once we get comfortable is when we're not in it as passionately anymore, so at that point, he suggests moving somewhere that will make us uncomfortable. I really like that way of thinking. He said that he thought we was growth minded until getting to JCCS and he's had to relearn from new perspectives. One suggestion he had that I really love is to write down 3 things we hope for in ourselves as a teacher and look at this every year. He suggested having a thinking partner to keep us in check and make sure we never get comfortable.
Meg Jacobson is the principal at Vista Magnet Middle School. She opened the school with Dr. V and looks to be very young as a principal. She was much more exact with the specifics that schools, or at least her school wants. She said they look for highly collaborative and reflective teachers who care about kids. At VMM, they offer a PLC everyday. Some days, they are subject-specific, some with the whole schools, some with grades and some with villages. I really like this and love that they look so strongly for teachers who are collaborative.
Kyle Ruggles is the principal at La Costa Canyon where I am teaching this year, so I was happy to see him in a different environment at CSUSM. He talked about teachers who really want to know their students and survey them to learn their strengths. He looks for teachers who can inspire students to always do better, those who can do a variety of things on campus and not just teach their subject and also those who can teach a wide variety of subjects. I have been really impressed with him as a principal, having spent a semester at his school. Everything that I have heard from him is very positive and I can feel that LCC and their employees and students are more positive because of him. I have even seen him outside directing traffic. These sorts of things really let the students and school know that he cares for the students above all.
